Vera Blue

Meet Vera Blue, the project from Celia Pavey – one of Australia’s most promising talents.

Following the release of singles ‘Private’ and ‘Mended’, the unstoppable singer-songwriter’s debut album, Perennial, introduces a fully-formed Vera Blue, seamlessly synthesising her folk past with a bold, electronic pop future. An intensely personal record, it traces the often-circular pathways between love and loss across its 12 tracks.

‘“Perennial” is a term for plants that come back year after year, and I like to relate that to memory, feelings and emotions,’ says Vera Blue. ‘It’s what the record is all about; relationships can be very cyclical, or never-ending, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s just part of life.’

The album is arranged into three chapters, which chronologically trace the development of Vera Blue; from her very first week writing, raw after the breakdown of a relationship, towards a place of renewed strength and vivacity.

‘I feel like it gives the listener an understanding of the phases and thought processes, the emotional rollercoaster I’ve been on these past 18 months,’ she explains. ‘[But] once this story of mine is released, it’s not about me anymore. I want it to be taken into the hands and hearts of the listeners as if it were their own.’

Recorded between Los Angeles and Sydney, Perennial was written with longtime collaborators Andy and Thom Mak (Tina Arena, Bertie Blackman) as well as engineer Jackson Barclay. It’s the product of countless hours spent crafting songs in the studio as a team, often right down to the wire.

‘We wrote and produced this album at the same time,’ says Andy Mak. ‘Thom, Vera and I would get together for a couple of weeks and just start writing. Once we had an idea we’d pick up instruments, beat pads, synths, guitars…whatever and started playing. I think we all played every instrument at various points of this album.’

Unsurprisingly, Perennial showcases a more sophisticated sound for Vera Blue, including some bold experiments with production.

Album tracks ‘Lady Powers’, ‘Regular Touch’ and ‘Magazine’ also bring out unabashed dance elements in Vera Blue’s songwriting, an aesthetic she believes is well overdue.

‘I dance a lot when I’m performing on tour, because the songs make me want to move. Before the Vera Blue project, I was sort of hiding behind my guitar when I was on stage, but now I can really go for it. That’s what the electronic side adds to the music.’

Despite its new sonic elements, the album is underpinned by the classic songwriting that has defined Vera Blue’s musical growth. Each song started its life organically, created on either piano or acoustic guitar, as evidenced on ‘We Used To’ and stunning album closer, ‘Mended’.

‘For me it’s very important to keep that folk part of it, having grown up listening to people like Joni Mitchell and Simon & Garfunkel,’ says Vera Blue. ‘It’s a really great blend, Andy’s done a great job of making them come together and feel fresh.”

Produced by Andy Mak, and most recently co-produced with Adam Anders, Perennial arrived on the eve of Vera Blue’s fast- selling national tour, including her second appearance – and first as a solo artist – at the sold-out Splendour In The Grass in two years.

Perennial sees Vera Blue finding arresting new ways to channel a voice Australia has already fallen for. Unflinchingly honest, it’s the album she had to write, with a sound that is entirely her own.

‘We could have made this album forever, but at the same time it feels ready and the songs feel exactly right,’ says Andy Mak. ‘I hope people listen to this album as a whole body of work, from start to finish in one sitting.’

‘When they hear it, they’re going to be able to relate to it in their own way,’ says Vera Blue. ‘That’s really special.’

Today Vera Blue shares the new video for her current single ‘Mended’. Directed by one of Australia’s most exciting emerging artists Cloudy Rhodes, the powerful ‘Mended’ video is a celebration of love and womanhood. Cloudy explains, ‘I wanted to make a film where we witness the triumph of a young woman rising-up to the experience of love. I wanted Vera to be the protagonist of the film who falls from the night sky, out of the darkness into the light – her falling is a metaphorical representation of ‘falling in love’.  Mended to me is all as about the female experience and that’s what I tried to convey through the visuals in this clip.’

Australian recording artist Vera Blue found her feet first as a singer and then as an acoustic guitarist. She found her sound mixing the music she’s long loved with lush and sultry electronica as heard on her EP ‘Fingertips’.  The lead track Hold’ has reached over 14 million streams and peaked at #1 on the Spotify AU Viral Chart, Top 5 UK/US and Global Spotify Viral Charts. The ‘Fingertips’ EP peaked at #3 on the iTunes Album Chart, garnered 3 x Top 100 ARIA Chart Singles and has been streamed over 21 million times world-wide to date and received glowing reviews.

We’re very excited to have partnered with Universal Music Australia to make Vera Blue part of the Capitol Records family. Her voice effortlessly carries the melodies from song to song and really draws in the listener with her unique blend of electronic and folk elements.  She has already solidified herself as a rising star in Australia and we can’t wait to continue to build upon her momentum here in the US,” says Mike Flynn, EVP A & R from Capitol Records.

Paradigm is one of the top music agencies in the world with clients including AerosmithBlack Eyed PeasColdplay and Ed Sheeran – just to name a few. Matt Galle, Senior Agent from Paradigm says, “We are thrilled to have Vera Blue join the Paradigm family and are looking forward to her debut North America dates.”

Currently in the studio recording her much anticipated debut album to be released this year, 2017 is shaping up to be massive. She has just come off the Australian Summer Festival season after two sold out national tours last year. The hit single ‘Papercuts’, which she features on and performed at the 2016 ARIA Awards with Illy, is now certified 3x Platinum peaking at #2 on the charts.
